Hi $[UD:FIRST_NAME||]$
It’s hard to believe we’re already approaching the halfway point of the year. As the mornings and evenings grow colder, we’re grateful for the recent spell of clear, settled weather — ideal conditions for progressing with external works across our active projects.
At Sansom, we’re proud of the diverse range of concrete repair and maintenance services we offer, but one area where we have built a particularly strong reputation is in tunnel infrastructure.
To date, we’ve successfully delivered waterproofing solutions for 15 new tunnels throughout New Zealand, establishing ourselves as a trusted partner for both public and private sector clients. Our tunnel portfolio includes some of the country’s most high-profile and challenging infrastructure projects, such as Auckland's Victoria Park Tunnel, Waterview Tunnel, and City Rail Link (CRL), which we’re proud to have completed waterproofing for 90% of the entire CRL, the largest transport project ever undertaken in New Zealand.
We've also worked on numerous pedestrian underpasses and access tunnels and carry out remediation and repair works on aging tunnel infrastructure.
Our tunnel expertise is not confined to a single service stream. Instead, we take a fully integrated approach that draws on multiple divisions within Sansom.
This vertical integration allows us to manage tunnel projects holistically — from diagnosis through to delivery and post-completion care — offering clients greater efficiency, reduced risk, and a consistently high standard of workmanship.
If you're involved in planning or managing tunnel works — whether new or remedial — we’d be happy to share our insights and explore how we can support your project objectives.
Wishing you a successful and productive month ahead.
Sincerely, Chad Holmes Director

Sansom's Tunnel Expertise
| |
Modern infrastructure relies heavily on tunnels, yet these essential structures present unique challenges in design, construction, and maintenance.
In New Zealand, tunnel projects face particular complexities due to being built infrequently and with stringent oversight requirements. From water supply conduits to rail passages, each tunnel serves a specific purpose and demands careful consideration across its entire lifecycle.
Check out Elton Sturmfels talking about his passion for tunnels, their challenges, and Sansom's solutions in the video above.
Below, you'll find more information on the work all of our divisions do in building, maintaining and repairing New Zealand's tunnels.

With extensive underground construction and remediation expertise, our skilled team is equipped to handle the unique challenges of tunnel environments.
We use high-quality tunnel membranes and advanced installation techniques to ensure effective waterproofing and tunnel protection.

| | | |
Did you know that Sansom was involved in Commercial Bay, the first stage of CRL? This involved encapsulating the two rail tunnels that converge beneath Queen Elizabeth Square and then re-emerge as a single tunnel towards Albert Street.
| |
All tunnels have roofs.
Our Roofing team has vast experience in preventing water ingress through the roofs of tunnels and worked on seven different roofs associated with the tunnels at CRL alone.
| | | |
Did you know on the Southern Vent Building Roof of the Waterview Tunnel, we applied a two-layer Soprema torch-on system, using our first Mini Macaden? This fully automated installation system allowed extremely quick and faultless installation of the membranes.
| |
Many tunnels have seismic joints, such as between tunnels and stations.
Our Facade team are experts in installing seismic joints and have been involved in all our major tunnel projects.
We install custom designed joints, WABO joints, Emseal joints, Balco joints, and Granor joints.
See what else our Facade team can do.
Did you know that at Aotea Station, as part of the CRL project, our team successfully completed the installation of a range of specialised seismic joint systems and fire barriers to meet the project’s high-performance standards? We installed 170 metres of CS SF-200 Seismic Joint, 3 metres of CS SF-400 Seismic Joint, 168 metres of ESWI-600 with integrated fire barriers along the building’s south elevation.
| |
Our Concrete Repairs Division is predominantly involved in the maintenance and repair of tunnels: - Concrete Repairs
- Composite Strengthening FRP
- Injection Repairs
- Crack Repairs
- Newton XTF
| | | |
Did you know that during construction of the Victoria Park Tunnel, we injected thousands of metres of leaking cracks with polyurethane resin? We also used hundreds of metres of injection hoses to inject a polyurethane resin system in the concrete construction joints, a common design for thick tunnel base slabs.
