Our new bi-monthly newsletter kicks off with our most recent milestone - our birthday!
| |
This August marks our 49th year in the Auckland Construction market, a milestone that I am immensely proud to be a part of.
Thinking back about the many great projects, challenges, and successes we have achieved, thoughts always drift to the people – the great diversity of characters that have created these memories and our history.
Through long hours and dedication we have completed work on some of Auckland’s most iconic structures shaping our city to what it has become today and what it will be in the future. Some of these projects and team members are listed in this newsletter. It has been a pleasure to be involved with all of them.
Personally, I feel attached to the journey of Sansom having grown up in the business with my father being one of the founding owners. Following in his footsteps was never part of my plan but now that it has happened, I am surprised at how much fun it is. I would like to thank personally all of our staff and clients for making it so. We spend so many hours at work and we think it is important that we are having fun along the way.
So, one more year until the 50-year milestone and the associated celebrations which will come with that. Regardless of what year it is, the directors of Sansom are committed to continuing to be the market leaders in all our diverse sectors. We will invest in our people, our service offering and continue to provide the expertise our field deserves.
Team Sansom ……‘49 not out’ ……and well and truly at the striker’s end.
Sincerely, Elton Sturmfels Director

When painter Neville Sturmfels met engineer Ernest Sansom in the early '70s, neither knew what they would build together. Starting with Ernest forming Sansom Contract Services in 1975, the pair purchased George Campbell Specialised Roofing in 1976 to gain access to the range of Hitchins products. About a year later, Neville became a shareholder and director of Sansom Contract Services, setting the foundation for what would become the Sansom we know today.
Then, in 1986, Peter Emson joined the team, later becoming a director/shareholder, rounding out the original management team.
Over the years, the company organically grew in team size and capability and worked on some of Auckland's most significant projects (with a few projects dotted around the country and overseas as well). While the services we offer has evolved, we've stayed true to our history of repairs and maintenance, waterproofing, and structural/seismic upgrades.

Some of the Projects We're Proud of
Auckland Harbour Bridge Moveable Barrier | After numerous deaths occurred on the bridge in just five years, Sansom collaborated with international engineers and developed a solution that was accepted by the government. In November 1990, the Auckland Harbour Bridge's 2.2km moveable lane barrier became operational, replacing the previous system of overhead signals and cones, and now manages 170,000 vehicles daily.
The now iconic Auckland structure was initially built in 1995. The casino complex and its tower were built in a little over two years, costing $76m. This was our first major new project and one of the first in New Zealand to use two-layer torch-on roofing, which was quite experimental at the time.
The City Rail Link (CRL) is New Zealand's largest construction project, connecting Auckland's train stations with underground tunnels and station upgrades. Sansom, working for the Link Alliance, has been involved from the start across all sites and using multiple disciplines including tanking, roofing, façade, concrete, and tunnelling, with a team of 30 professionals onsite.
Commercial Bay is the largest mixed-use development ever undertaken in Auckland. Starting in 2016, Sansom was involved in developing an extensive design phase and the largest basement the team had ever worked on, taking four years to complete.
The Victoria Park Tunnel was constructed to address the bottleneck on the Auckland motorway system between Newmarket and the Auckland Harbour Bridge, resulting in safer and more reliable trips for 150,000 vehicles a day. Beginning in 2011, Sansom supported design efforts and remediation work.
